Male pattern of baldness is otherwise called as Androgenic Alopecia. The hair loss happens in a particular pattern. The hairline along the frontal region and temples recede back , the hair on the top of the head starts thinning, leading to complete loss of the crown hair. But the hairs in the sides of the head and the back of the head are spared.
The male hormone DHT (di-hydroxytestosterone) is important for the normal male sexual development. The hair follicles in the temples and the crown have receptors, for DHT. In some cases, these receptors become active, and attract the hormones towards it .The DHT effect on the hair follicles, results in their shrinkage. This shortens the lifespan of the follicles and prevents them from producing hair normally, thus causing a premature ageing of the hair strands. Hence, the hair loss which results, affects the temples and the crown areas more prominently.
