Cholelithiasis(gall bladder stone)
Gall Bladder Stones are a health condition in which small-sized solid particles form from the bile cholesterol and bilirubin present in the gallbladder. The Gall bladder is a sac like organ in the upper right part of the abdomen and is a part of the biliary system that includes the liver and the pancreas. Bile is a fluid made by the liver to help in the digestion of fats and it is stored in the gallbladder until required.
Gallbladder stones are of two types mainly:
- Cholesterol stones: which are yellowish green in color and are the most commonly found.
- Pigment stones: which are smaller and darker and are formed due to excess bilirubin in the bile.
Causes
The most common reasons for this health condition are:
- Huge amount of Cholesterol stones that develop due to high cholesterol in your bile than your bile can dissolve
- Huge amount of bilirubin present in your bile which the gallbladder can’t break down.
- Being Over-weight or Under-weight
- Huge amounts of concentrated bile in the gallbladder.
Symptoms
Gallbladder stones have no symptoms and people are unaware of the fact that they have them until and unless it hits you hard. Symptoms arise when the conditions get complicated and pain occurs. These are called attacks and they can occur at regular intervals. Pain happens when you consume foods that are high in fat. Although the pain may vary from person to person, usually it targets the right shoulder or back.
Other common symptoms are:
- Nausea and vomiting,
- Dark urine
- Clay-colored stools
- Stomach pain
- Burping
- Indigestion
- Fever, and
- Jaundice.
Diagnose Gall Bladder Stones
Always a physical examination is done by your doctor to measure the extent of the condition. This will include checking your eyes and skin for visible changes in color. There are also a set of diagnostic tests that help your doctor see inside your body which are:
- Ultrasound: This is the fastest method to see inside one’s body and to confirm that you have gallstone disease as it shows abnormalities associated with acute cholelithiasis.
- Abdominal CT scan: An imaging test that takes specialized X-rays of your liver and abdominal region.
- Gallbladder radionuclide scan: You are injected with a radioactive substance that travels through your blood to the liver and gallbladder to reveal any blockage.
- Blood tests: The blood tests show the amount of bilirubin in your blood, the functioning of the liver and any other signs of infection.
- Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): Here, the doctors make use of a camera and X-rays to view the condition in the bile and pancreatic ducts.
